Abby Lee Miller told her girls, “Everyone is replaceable.” But I bet she never thought the mantra would be used on her. Hulu has just released Dance Mom’s New Era and it is shockingly similar to its original counterpart. But there is a new face in town, Gloria Hampton. Glo is well-versed when it comes to the dance world. She currently runs the Bleu Junior Elites or Studio Bleu in Ashburn, VA. She has helped many students land jobs on Broadway and has even been a judge for Dance One. And even though she might have once been friends with Abby, it seems like this dance teacher is ready to make her own mark.
Is Miss Glo a carbon copy of Abby Lee Miller?
I’m going to be honest here. When Episode 1 started playing, I was grabbing my water, but all I heard was Abby’s voice. But when I looked at my screen, I saw the new Dance Mom’s teacher, Miss Glo. Their voices were eerily similar, and I had to ask myself, “Did Abby have plastic surgery?” The more I watched the new season, the more I felt like Miss Glo and Ms. Abby were cut from the same cloth. Naturally, some things were always going to be the same when it came to the reboot. For example, the ever-crumbling pyramid at the beginning of every practice still stands tall.
Miss Glo has a favortie
The level of favoritism that Abby showed Maddie Ziggler in the original series was insane. Abby would yell at the rest of the dance squad and then talk sweetly to Maddie. It didn’t go amiss that Miss Glo also seemed to have her own favorite when it came to Audrey Brudner. But I would expect to be her favorite, too, if she lived in my basement. Unlike Abby and Maddie’s mother, Melissa Gisoni, Aurdrey’s mom, Tammi and Glo are best friends.
Both Maddie and Audrey were leads in most of the competitive dances. And both have real dancing jobs. Maddie got her 15 minutes of fame with SIA, and Audrey was in the Music Man with Hugh Jackman. So, it made sense to draw a comparison. And like mothers, I guess a dance teacher always will have their favorite. However, neither Abby nor Glo were good at hiding their inability to favor their star pupil.
There is one significant difference between Abby Lee Miller and Miss Glo
While these two women might share similar traits in some respects, they are also very different teachers. Abby just seemed to yell for the sake of it, for the power of scaring little children. However, Miss Glo appears to have a point behind her raised voice. She is a strict teacher who genuinely wants to see her students improve. Even though Miss Glo does yell, she is undoubtedly kinder to the dancers.
The verbal abuse that we witnessed with Abby isn’t as strong in Dance Mom’s New Era. Miss Glo said it herself in the intro: “I can make these kids stars, and I can do it without them resenting me in 10 years.” I made sure to keep an eye on Glo, as some of her critiques raised dark orange, bordering on red flags. However, compared to Abby, she is still better at hiding her disdain if she has any. I did see tinges of manipulation, especially when she cried and told the mothers, “I’ll take the blame.”
Glo Hampton was a dance mom, too
One stark difference is the fact that Glo has been exactly where the rest of the moms have been sitting. The dance teacher told Decider, “I got my daughter to a place where she can make a career dancing and doing what she loves. It’s not always easy to navigate them. Forty years of dance moms is not easy. But there comes a point where you have to lay down the law, and you’re like, ‘You have to trust me and that I have the best interest for all the children.” Glo also admits that she certainly has “a different teaching style than the predecessor. And I think that shows I’m tough, I’m absolutely tough. I just get results a different way.”
However, even though Glo and Abby are good friends, the OG wasn’t thrilled that the Studio Bleau teacher was cast. But Glo is making sure to put her own stamp on the reboot and will definitely be bringing Dance Mom’s New Era out of the shadows of the ALDC.
