Lifting the lid on how reality TV works. It’s been over a decade since The Hills ended its run, and fans are still interested in the former cast. Moreover, with the likes of Bethenny Frankel questioning the practices of the industry, there is scrutiny about certain dynamics on The Hills.
The cast was quite young at the time of filming. And Laguna Beach star, Lo Bosworth, recently spoke about how producers manipulated a feud between herself and co-star Audrina Patridge.
Lo recalled not knowing that she and Audrina “were at odds”
On The Hills Season 4, Lo and Audrina were roommates with the series star, Lauren Conrad. It seemed the trio started feuding, and ultimately, Audrina moved out of the house.
However, Lo currently revealed to Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast that she and Audrina were friends during filming. Neither was aware of how editing would preset their friendship, all to fit a certain narrative.
“The season of The Hills where Audrina and I were at odds, when they shot that season, I had no idea that we were at odds,” Lo explained during the interview.
“I thought we were friends,” she added. “And then the edit came out and the edit was not a very flattering edit of me.”
According to the Love Wellness founder, producers created tension with sly editing, multiple camera angles, “voiceovers” and clips of her “staring into space.” All of which, presented her as an uncaring friend.
Lo revealed how editing changed her “real-life relationship”
“You don’t know going into those shows, when you’re young, that they already have the entire season mapped out on a wall with Post-It notes of the entire storyline with the arcs and this person’s going to do this and this person’s going to do that,” Lo explained.
“On our show, they would basically have us sit down for a scene, they would shoot it and then they would reposition the cameras. And they would do it five or six times and they would do it so … they would get you to say what they wanted you to say,” the former reality TV star said.
“They were doing it so ultimately that they could get the cut they wanted to fit the narrative that they had planned,” she added.
Audrina took the editing to heart, and the friendship suffered after the season aired.
“I think, unfortunately, for her, that created a sense of, ‘Oh, we must not be friends in real life,’” Lo explained. “That season, in real life, we were totally friends and the show comes out and it changes your real-life relationship.”
Lo referred to Bethenny’s experience in reality TV. And it seems that the entrepreneur is still reflecting on the negative impact The Hills had on her friendship with Audrina.
“The edit that you get can affect your real-life relationships after the fact,” she concluded.
