Candiace’s Plan to Exit RHOP for Music May Backfire

I’ve never really been a Candiace Dillard Bassett fan from the start. Since joining the Real Housewives of Potomac for Season 3, Candiace has gone above and beyond to be the drama queen. Between her pocket triangle for her tears and rude attitude towards the other women, I haven’t made an effort to create room for her in my Real Housewives heart. But I will concede that Candiace has had some solid storylines, including fighting pretty horribly with her mother, marrying Chris Bassett, and figuring out her music career. The Miss United States winner is all or nothing when it comes to her music and even sang her intro this season. But will it pan out? I doubt it.

Season 8 of RHOP has not been extremely interesting. That could be why Candiace is thinking of Plan B and Plan C. Her escape route from reality TV seems to be hyperfocused on her music and lyrics. She told Page Six, “In life if you don’t always have a plan, what are you doing? There is definitely a plan.”

It seems Candiace is looking for a clean break from the franchise- at some point. The Fine Whine singer still needs her Bravo paycheck for now but wants to bow out gracefully like Kandi Burruss just did. The singer shared, “I just love that she’s made this clean, beautiful, peaceful exit – or break, as she put it — just because she’s so wrapped up in all of these successful endeavors, including music, including theater, entrepreneurship.”

Does Anyone Know Her Music?

It hasn’t gone unnoticed that the Drive Back singer has used RHOP as a platform for her music. However, is anyone even interested in a middle-aged pop star? I feel like Taylor Swift holds court in that domain. Supposedly, Candiace has reached number 24 on the Billboard R&B Charts and number 4 on iTunes. But I am skeptical.

Even famed rapper Nicki Minaj had some shade to throw when she hosted the Season 6 reunion, noting she was suspicious of how many albums Candiace had sold after Candiace shared she had over a half million streams. Nicki, being the music pro, asked how many copies the album sold, which is defined as when someone downloads every song from the album.

I don’t doubt Candiace’s vocal talent- the girl can sing. She did just sing the National Anthem at a Lakers game, but so has a contestant from American Idol. I doubt her ability to truly sell records. On RHOP, she’s a brat who won’t talk to half her co-stars and cries at the drop of a hat. While her witty one-liners are funny for the show, they are actually quite pointy. I don’t see how Candiace can portray herself as this sweet singer who wants fans when she is downright mean to people around her, especially when she feels backed into the corner.

RHOP Still Needs Her

Like her or not, Candiace is still a huge part of the Real Housewives of Potomac’s success. The singer has made a name for herself when it comes to shading other women, which has included making fun of their appearances. I dare say Candiace has carved out a little niche for herself as the villain of the series, with people being forced to talk about her actions even if they don’t always enjoy watching her.

But to many, Candiace is one of the only women in the group who hasn’t changed her tune since joining the series. Yes, she is young and impulsive, but viewers have been able to see her grow over the years. Some viewers also find that she is a loyal friend even though she didn’t check on her friend with tummy troubles this past episode.

For the most part, she seems to care about her relationships with the women she actually likes. If you say something low to her, she is going to hell with it. And some viewers are here for it. Since Season 3, she has had quite the glow-up, but personally, she still isn’t my cup of tea, and I think leaving the franchise could be a costly mistake.
