Barbara Kavovit’s mayoral run had about as much influence as her tenure on the Real Housewives of New York, full of good intentions but without any impact. Sure, she’s a highly accomplished business woman who scaled the competition in a male-dominated industry, but that kind of success does not always translate into a political career.
Barbara just kind of faded into the background. Had she managed to wrangle Ramona Singer into humble self-awareness, that would have been the ultimate indication of political prowess. It seems that accomplishment belongs to Eboni K. Williams, a.k.a. the Ramona whisperer. But while Eboni tends to Ramona this season, New York City leadership leaves much to be desired in real time. Unfortunately, the person to solve the problems of the Big Apple will not be Barbara.
On Thursday, Page Six reported that the 55 year old entrepreneur ended her mayoral bid after a five-month campaign. At the time of termination, Barbara declared that, “running for mayor has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of my professional career.”
It takes a bit more than just a stint on reality TV. When announcing her campaign in September, Barbara opined, “well, I have to say, if Donald Trump could be President of the United States, I can be Mayor of New York City. You know, I’m a builder. I know how to build. I know how to rebuild.”
A glass ceiling has yet to be broken in New York City, so Barbara endorsed another female candidate that is still in the running. “There is so much work that lies ahead to rebuild NYC and I’d like to see a qualified woman become the next Mayor of NYC,” she said, “and that’s why I’m endorsing Kathryn Garcia.”

Though she received lukewarm enthusiasm for her bid, the RHONY alum isn’t ready to give up yet. Barbara said, “I want to thank my campaign staff and all my friends & family who supported me throughout my race. You will see me again in four years.”
And while Barbara believes that NYC needs someone “who is strong, smart, ballsy, and not afraid of the hard work that lies ahead,” it will not be her this time around. She simply did not meet the New York City Board of Elections petition requirements. It was a short-lived but, “amazing, positive, and enlightening” experience.

Several Real Housewives gave their two cents about Barbara’s political run. Braunwyn Windham-Burke is a supporter, though unfortunately is not eligible to cast a vote in favor of her friend in NYC. “Barb is one of the most bad-ass, progressive, intelligent women that I know. There’s nobody better than Barb to get the job done,” she said.
But Sonja Morgan, miss New York City personified, had a different perspective. “I mean, I think Barbara has other things to take care of other than other people, you know, that’s just my humble opinion.”
So who would Sonja vote for? “I want someone that really loves this city and that goes for our governor as well… I miss Bloomberg,” she said, “I miss Mayor Koch. I miss Dinkins. We need somebody with gumption and grit. Who’s not in it for the glory or the money or the book deal.”
The mayoral elections will take place in November.
