When Dancing with the Stars co-host Julianne Hough dissed Season 27 winner, Bobby Bones, his feelings may have been a little hurt.
On the August 18 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Julianne and country singer Mickey Guyton who they thought should never have won the Mirrorball Trophy.
Mickey immediately thought of Bobby, and Julianne hesitantly agreed with her. Ouch. Though Bobby was willing to give Julianna a pass, he seemed somewhat outraged that Mickey would single him out. He let both of them know his true feelings in an Instagram video posted the following day.
The people voted for Bobby Bones
“Mickey Guyton, what the …,” Bones huffed. “Of all people.”
Though Julianne initially tried to remain diplomatic, she quickly jumped on the anti-Bobby wagon. “Oh, I actually agree with you!” the actress/singer/dancer responded. “And I think it’s because of the fanbase, right? It’s all about the fanbase on that show. He was not the best dancer, I agree.”
But that’s what DWTS is all about. The judges and the hosts hound us every week to “vote for your favorite.” But when we do, they cry that the “best dancer” didn’t win. Can’t have it both ways, judges. Plus, it’s only entertainment. We’re not voting for an elected office here.
“I was the worst dancer, and I take pride in that,” Bobby went on. “I tried as hard as anybody in the history of the show, but I can’t dance now, [and I] couldn’t dance then.”
“I’m a terrible dancer,” he continued. “I was a terrible dancer, but they changed the rules after I left because the fan vote was so good.”
The new rules only allow viewers to vote while the show is live. So once again, the West Coast gets screwed. Unless they let the left side of the country stream the show live on Disney+ (which I don’t think they did last year), anybody west of the Mississippi is excluded from voting for their favorite.
Bobby’s “cool” with Julianne Hough
Though he didn’t appreciate her comments regarding his win, Bobby was clear that he has nothing against Julianne. He referred to the Footloose star as “cool” and “awesome.”
The radio personality won Season 27 thanks to his loyal fan base, despite receiving embarrassing low scores from the judges every week. But he acknowledged his obvious lack of dancing skills and accepted the judges’ criticism with grace and good humor.
“I don’t think they want me to win, frankly,” he said at the time. “I think the judges want somebody who came in with more dance experience to win.”
“But that’s why the show isn’t just about the judges,” he added. “It’s also about the people. I think the show hasn’t had a winner like me ever, and I don’t know what that means to them.”
Season 33 of Dancing with the Stars will premiere on September 17 on ABC and Disney+.
