Candiace Dillard Bassett Has ‘Fear of Having Light-Skinned Children’

Candiace Dillard Bassett’s recent comments on the complexion of her future children created quite a controversy as of March 18.

The comments themselves date back to January 24 of this year, when The Real Housewives of Potomac star had a discussion with Breakbeat Media about colorism in entertainment. During the chat, Candiace said, “I do have a fear of having light-skinned children.”

Candiace laughed and continued, “I want my kids to be brown. But they’re probably not gonna be brown. And I’m like, becoming okay with it.” She assured listeners, “I want my kids to be brown, but if they’re not, it’s fine.”

The reaction to Candiace’s words on social media

Despite making these comments in January, a controversy was ignited on March 18 when X user @RHLegend32 posted the clip. “Candiace is a legit weirdo. This behavior is highly problematic,” the user wrote to accompany the clip.

The tweet’s replies were also critical. Viewers shared remarks such as, “It shouldn’t matter what complexion her kids end up being. This is really ugly for her to say,” and “Would be sad if her kids saw the clips, no?”

Unfortunately, Candiace’s comments about her kids will likely cast a shadow over other important points she made during her discussion. For example, Candiace said, “When you don’t read, you don’t know that colorism does not just affect the Black community.” The host referred specifically to Pakistani women.

And when discussing light-skinned people of color, Candiace said, “There is an experience and it should be validated.”

As for the interviewer, DaMona, aka, “Don’t Call Me White Girl,” Candiace called her “Mona Luther King for the light-skinned girls.” This is probably a topic that will roll on for some time now that it’s been brought to the surface once more.

Meanwhile, The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 8 continues Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.
