On the March 5 Vanderpump Rules Aftershow, Katie Maloney called out her co-star Scheana Shay for being a “male sympathizer.”
In the episode, Scheana’s feelings about Tom Sandoval came to a head. He was a good friend for 15 years. During Covid, when she was pregnant and had no income, Scheana was worried about how she was going to pay her bills. One morning she woke up and found Tom had sent her a PayPal of several thousand dollars. He just wanted to help out a friend in need.
That’s the Sandoval she misses. But his ex, Ariana Madix, wants everybody to pick sides. If Scheana decides to be friends with Sandoval again, Ariana will cut her off. And Katie probably will, too, since she seems to be up Ariana’s ass these days. Scheana’s understandably torn.
Scheana the friendship she had with Tom
On the group trip to Lake Tahoe, Scheana was paired with Sandoval during a meditation/healing session. It brought up all her feelings of being in the middle and having to hate Tom on Ariana’s behalf.
After the emotional session, Scheana FaceTimed Ariana and Katie. She told them how upset she was. But Ariana is still not (and may not ever be) open to hearing anything positive about her ex. She hates him and insists that all her friends do, too, or they’ll no longer be her friends. Isn’t that a little manipulative?
“I can’t keep hating him for you,” Scheana told Ariana, which didn’t go over well with the Something About Her owner. “I’m mad that he did all of this because I miss him. I miss my friend.”
“Yeah,” Ariana answered, dismissively rolling her eyes. “That sucks.” She didn’t really want to hear it and offered no support for Scheana’s feelings.
Katie has another theory
In a separate interview, Katie said, “I think it’s kind of ridiculous. You’re conflicted over a person who kind of doesn’t exist. I understand that you guys were close at a certain point … but also you’ve been very close with Ariana. So if you’re having a hard time making a choice, this person made it very easy because [he’s] been an asshole.”
“But Scheana’s … a male sympathizer,” Katie continued. Katie recalled that when she and Tom were going through their divorce, “Suddenly, Tom Schwartz was one of her very good friends, who really needed her support.”
“There’s something about male validation that [Scheana] really seeks out,” Katie concluded.
Katie thinks it’s odd now that Ariana is going through the breakup with Sandoval, Scheana just “really needs” this friendship with him.
Come on, Katie. It’s been a year already. Does friendship really need to be such an exclusive thing? “If you’re friends with him, you can’t be friends with me?” I thought we left that sh*t back in middle school.
