Sister Wives’ Kody Brown Recognizes His ‘Failures’

With the disintegration of the Brown family over the past couple of years, Sister Wives patriarch Kody Brown is finally wondering if he could have done things differently. Could Kody actually be taking some responsibility for once rather than blaming everything on everyone else? That’s a change.

On the October 29 episode of Sister Wives, Kody took stock of his shrinking family. One wife had already left him at that point, and two more had one foot out the door. Most of his adult children aren’t speaking to him.

Reflecting on “some of the failures” he’s gone through, Kody wondered if he’d been “expecting too much from the family with this one family idea.” So then, still not his fault. It’s everyone else’s fault for not being “up to the task.” Hoo boy, this guy.

More successful as ‘cousins?’

“We might have been more successful,” he theorized, “had we been in different homes with the kids growing up like they were cousins.” Cousins where their dad has sleepovers with all their “aunts?” Yeah, that would be a lot different.

In 2014, the Brown family held a “family commitment celebration.” They wrote a family mission statement celebrating their new life together in the Las Vegas cul de sac. But over the years, as they’ve grown further apart, Kody feels as if they’ve “shredded” that mission statement.

“What has happened with our family is very sad to me,” he bemoaned. “It’s just one of those things that’s happened. I have to move on.” As if he had no part in it at all. That’s what’s sad.

Hoping to “redefine” his life, Kody reflected on his membership in the Apostolic United Brethren, a fundamentalist sect of the Mormon religion. Despite having “always been a man of faith,” he now admits he’s “struggled for a long time … I’m [no longer] a fit in my old religion.”

The family crumbles as wives depart

The Covid pandemic was the death knell to many of Kody’s relationships. His strict rules alienated his older children and caused his wives to become much more independent than they already were. Living almost exclusively with his fourth and most compliant wife Robyn Brown, his three other wives discovered life without Kody.

Third wife Christine Brown officially left Kody in November 2021. Wife number two Janelle Brown followed in December 2022, with first wife Meri Brown close behind in January 2023. After 30 years of polygamy and 18 children, Kody now lives in a monogamous relationship with Robyn, whom he calls the “love of my life.”

Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10/9c on TLC.
