Below Deck Captains are the most critical component of the yacht crew, as they lead the entire team and are responsible for every guest onboard. While the Captains are usually spot on with their decision making, there have also been times where they have really dropped the ball.
We understand that being a Captain on a super yacht is stressful, but we just cannot fathom what these Captains were thinking during these moments.
Captain Sandy’s Bad Decision Making Caused Chaos On Below Deck Med Season 4
Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4 was nothing short of chaotic, and Captain Sandy Yawn is really the only one to blame. Things started to go wrong after it came to light that Chef Mila Kolomeitseva likely lied on her resume, as she struggled to cook basic dishes for the guests. Captain Sandy should have taken initiative and fired Mila immediately, but instead kept her around five episodes too long.
After taking way too long to fire Mila, Captain Sandy made another bad decision by deciding to give her position to 3rd Stew Anastasia Surmava. While Anastasia did her best and definitely whipped up better dishes than Mila, she was not professionally trained. When charter guests are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars, they deserve to have a Chef onboard who is the best of the best.
Captain Sandy eventually brought back Ben Robinson to be Chef for the remainder of the season, however, her decisions still had bad consequences for some of the crew. After Anastasia returned to her 3rd Stew position, Captain Sandy had to let go of June Foster, who had since stepped into the role. Captain Sandy failed to tell June that her position was temporary, which was another huge mistake.
While Captain Sandy is somewhat controversial, Below Deck viewers can agree that she knows what she is doing when it comes to running a boat. However, Captain Sandy was off her game throughout Season 4, which ultimately hurt both the crew and the guests. If Captain Sandy would have simply fired Mila sooner, the rest of the season’s chaos could have been avoided.
Captain Jason Messed Up By Firing Adam Kodra
Captain Jason Chambers from Below Deck Down Under is one of the most beloved Below Deck Captains, although even he makes critical mistakes. One of these would be his recent decision to fire Deckhand Adam Kodra, which enraged many fans.
Adam’s firing was mainly based around one mistake made onboard, in which he accidentally dropped an anchor too far into the water. Captain Jason explained that this mistake was not a small one, and could potentially pose a lot of danger to the boat. While Captain Jason and the exterior crew were able to resolve the issue, he still ultimately made the decision to terminate Adam’s employment because of it.
Captain Jason was wrong to fire Adam, since he was a huge team player regardless of his mistake. Adam took his role as Deckhand very seriously, and many viewers did not think he deserved to be fired. Others believe that Captain Jason should have fired Deckhand Culver Bradbury instead, since he does not take the position nearly as seriously as Adam did.
Captain Glenn Unfairly Blamed Daisy For Obnoxious Guests
Captain Glenn Shephard is another fan favorite Captain from Below Deck Sailing Yacht, although his judgment is not always the best. One of Captain Glenn’s worst judgment calls was when he blamed Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher and the interior crew for a group of completely disrespectful guests.
During a one-on-one with Daisy, Captain Glenn called her out after the guests complained that they didn’t have any toilet paper. Daisy respectfully explained that the guests always had toilet paper, as she and the other Stews made sure their rooms were stocked. Captain Glenn then asked Daisy if she was implying that the guests were lying, which was just completely unreasonable.
While it is normal to expect the interior team to deliver only the highest quality of service, Captain Glenn should have been more trusting of Daisy’s word. The charter guests in question were particularly obnoxious, and seemingly went out of their way to make their rooms and beds messy. Captain Glenn had worked with Daisy for three seasons by this point, so he should have known that her work ethic is top tier.
