Sometimes getting a renewed perspective on reality TV stars is beneficial. It’s easy to turn those we see on reality shows as villains or saints, people to cheer for or despise. But at the end of the day, they are all humans within their own journey. Individually flawed and doing their best.
Captain Sandy Yawn may not be a fan favorite currently, but this week she deserves to be applauded by all. Sure, the Below Deck Mediterranean captain plays favorites with bosun Malia White and Third Stew Courtney Veale. She micromanages and subjected the entire Season Six crew to extended time with Lexi Wilson when she should have been fired for physically assaulting Mzi Dempers and verbally abusing Lloyd Spencer. Yes, Sandy’s motives and decisions on the show are questionable, but at 33 years sober, some positivity and support is definitely in order.
Earlier this week, Sandy posted the milestone on her Instagram account. She is pictured in an athletic outfit and sipping from a water bottle against a stunning backdrop. Sandy’s message alludes to a troubled past, as well as some of the difficulties she has endured recently with her health. The message reads, “it’s been 33 years clean for me. From jails, institutions, car crashes, motorcycle accidents, hospitals, bankruptcy, heart attack & cancer.”
“I felt like a hopeless human being,” Sandy continued, “always in trouble, people turning away from me because I was so destructive. The day finally came when I had my last drink and drug on August 29th 1989. My life today is beyond my wildest dreams.”

Sandy’s achievements are tremendous. And it’s easy to see why she takes her work so seriously, and clashes with those who don’t pull their all into table settings. But like her or not on the show, it’s a good insight why she prioritizes her reputation and profession.
Sandy included contact information for those followers that may be struggling with addiction issues. She wrote, “if your suffering from addiction and want help, call the hotline and ask for help. 1-855-290-0468. God speed to you all. Today I have gratitude!”
Sandy got a message of support from fellow sober Bravolebrity Leah McSweeney. The Real Housewives of New York maverick posted heart emojis. Shahs of Sunset cast member Mercedes Javid wrote, “congratulations.”
Congratulations and all the best Sandy!
