We’re only two weeks into the current season of Big Brother 13 and already, it has become a lackluster season.
Similar to the big failure of the “Saboteur” twist last season during which the Saboteur was the first Houseguest evicted, the twist this season of the returning “dynamic duos” is turning out to be one big ball of fail.
As I’ve stated on numerous occasions, Big Brother might just be my favorite reality show of all time, yes, I like it even more than the Housewives, okay maybe just slightly more. The show is simply genius and manages to captivate fans year after year with crazy twists and even crazier characters. So when it was revealed this season that some of the popular past HGs would be returning, I and others were filled with glee! However the show premiered and just two weeks in, it’s become predictable, lackluster and I find myself wishing the returning HGs had never returned. My reasons are below –
The Dick Factor – While I’m no fan of Evel Dick, he was arguably the most entertaining, combative, and explosive player on the cast this season. Matter of fact in the history of Big Brother. His return was met with cheers from both fans and non-fans of his. Love him or hate him, you knew he was going to make this season one to watch. However, Evel Dick’s run in the BB13 house was short lived. As in he had already left the house by the time the show premiered on Thursday, July 7. Even worse, ED was not replaced and instead his daughter, the slightly annoying Danielle, was given a golden key guaranteeing her safety for 4 weeks. Even much worse, no explanation was given for Dick’s departure. Seriously, the viewers deserved an explanation. It’s the least Big Brother could do after his abrupt exit.
The Returning HGs – Once again, this twist sounded great in theory but my feelings started to change once the returning HGs (Jeff and Jordan, Brendon and Rachel, Evel Dick and Danielle) actually re-entered the house. Something about the return just felt a bit like deja vu, sort of like a been there done that feeling probably because they had been there and done that. As expected, Jeff and Jordan were still as adorable as ever while Brendon and Rachel were still as annoying as ever. Evel Dick and Danielle were no longer on speaking terms which was not surprising and felt very 2007. With the returning HGs, we are missing out on the magic that came out of their first appearances. Seeing Jeff and Jordan connecting on the show, possibly falling in love was a one time deal as well as seeing Brenchel connecting on the most ridiculous things. Plus having to see Evel Dick and Danielle try to mend their relationship… again with ED carrying Dani all the way to the end… again would have been pretty boring and uneventful. And isn’t it interesting that even in ED’s absence, he’s still carrying Danielle further in the game?
The New Houseguests – This brings me to the new HGs who I now find myself rooting for at all costs. Why? Well because they are now the underdogs in the game. In addition to the fact that it’s really unfair to pit the newbies against some of the best players to play the game. After all, Jordan and ED are past winners while the other returning HGs made it pretty far in their respective seasons. While the poor newbies pretended to be excited upon hearing Julie Chen’s announcement of the twist, you could clearly see in their eyes that they were none too pleased to be sharing their season and chances at half a million dollars with others who already had their chance. And just as expected, the returning HGs banded together to form a tight alliance and have been mercilessly kicking the butts of the newbies. Let’s face it, did they ever really stand a chance? And despite the newbies being stupid, not being able to stick together, and being amateurs at the game (well this is their first time playing), it’s gotten to the point where I find myself hopelessly rooting for them, and hoping they pick off the returning HGs, even Jeff and Jordan – both of whom I happen to love, one by one.
The All Star Season? – With the return of the 6 HGs this season, what does this mean for a future BB all star season? The first and last all star season was season 7 which would lead any rational fan to believe season 14 (next year) would make the second all star season. By bringing back the HGs this year, does this mean they won’t appear on next year’s all star? Better yet, what does this twist mean for next year’s all star? Is that even in the works? As a devoted BB fan, I can only hope! As the first all star season was one of the best BB seasons yet. Can you imagine an all star season with Jeff, Jordan, Brendon, Rachel, Evel Dick, Danielle, and other great players? Now that would have been something to watch! But by bringing these players back this year, Big Brother might have inadvertently ruined what could have been a phenomenal all star season 14.
And judging from the feedback of Big Brother fans online, it seems majority of them feel the same way I do. Following Jordan’s win for HOH last Thursday, many fans started to complain about the predictability of this season.
The Reality Blurred blog summed it up best – “Dominic seems like he has some game in him, so I was disappointed when he lost HOH and Jordan won. Her win makes me significantly less interested in the next week of competition because the returnees remain in control. The show and game work best when power flips, but this win plus this season’s structure means there’s little chance of that.”
Some of the comments from BB fans on twitter are below –
“[The newbies] are more like superfans than players,” tweeted TammyRene_.
“The show is predictable b/c we’ve seen the vets play before, we knw all their moves..so it’s like wtf step ur game up newbies,” tweeted IamJerves.
“Gonna be a boring week!!! I cannot take any more of Bookie,” tweeted auroralmama.
“The veterans seem so bored and not very appreciative that they are there.” tweeted RHO_TWEETS.
I couldn’t agree more. Big Brother had better hope the newbies start winning some competitions if they plan on keeping me interested this season. Because quite frankly, a Big Brother 13 season in which the alums pick off the newbies one by one and end up making it to the final 5 will be awful to watch. They had their chances. The newbies deserve a fair chance as well.

The Big Brother folks must be breathing a sigh of relief today as the nominees Adam and Dominic ended up winning the veto which at least brought some well needed drama and unpredictability to the game. The returning HGs alliance wants Jordan to put up Cassie, well mostly Rachel, which caused some conflict between Jordan, who likes Cassie, and Rachel. Rachel and Cassie, who now knows she is the target, got into last night. And today, Cassie and Brendon also got into it. The veto ceremony will take place today though it’s all but certain Cassie and Shelly will be the replacements.
